NATIONAL RALLY,
20th – 27th July, 2010 |
The 2010 National Rally is being held in Dayboro Showground Queensland |
| Dayboro is a small country town just north west of Brisbane. The main street still looks much like it did over 100 years ago. It has had a few name changes since first settlement but its present name is after William Henry Day who was one of the first settlers. He trialled sugar growing in the area. The district is noted for its dairy industry, pineapple and banana growing. There is a timber industry, mostly in hoop pines, on the D'Aguilar Range to the north of the township. Honey production has been constant over 100 years in the district. Like many areas in Australia there were early gold finds but the rich soils of the area proved to be more profitable. The Showgrounds are a well used facility in the area. There is a walkway from the town to the showgrounds and on Sundays the horses arrive for their weekly ride. It is known as "The place where the walkway ends and the West begins". There is a long driveway from Mt Mee / Dayboro Road into the showgrounds so look for the sign at the driveway. It is just past the old Saw Mill which is now the local Vet on the left if approaching from the town. The town has an old Queensland Style Hotel at the top of the main street and a selection of coffee shops, bakery, Post Office, Sausage Man Butcher, Super IGA supermarket, Dress Shop, hardware, garage etc. It is a comfortable run from Brisbane so very popular at weekends with visitors to the many Art Galleries and Wineries in the district. If you approach from over Mt Mee from the Woodford and Kilcoy area there are a couple of interesting things to see. The lookout at Mt Mee is worthy of a photographic stop as it overlooks the Glass House Mountains to Moreton Bay. The Gerard Poed Gallery at Ocean View is open 1Oam -5pm Friday to Monday, with limited edition Panoramic Photography on display. So if you want to visit this Gallery you may need to come early and join the workers after noon, on the Monday before the rally. There are a couple of wineries you will pass but they open only at weekends. Also there will be a working honey farn that is often open for sales. |
Kilcoy has a dump Point in Town Park. This area has hot showers and toilet and costs $15 a night along with the Showgrounds in Kilcoy. Free camping is still available at Cruice Park 4km NW of Woodford at the Junction of the Kilcoy to Beerwah Road. We expect the area at Wylie Park in Petrie to be available for an overnight stay. It has been closed to camping because the travelling public were not using as intended. The local council is working with the State Government to take control of the area from Main Roads. This should occur before the rally. It is the nearest official dump point to Dayboro. Here you can use the hot showers and fill water tanks and empty grey and black water. It is within walking distance of the shops and railway station with regular trains to Brisbane. I will be keeping in touch with the council regarding this, so contact me closer to the rally time if planning on staying there before the rally. We plan to have some "Ask the Expert Sessions " with --- How to use your GPS/Tom Tom; Parking the Motorhome; First Aid Supplies; Craft Sessions; Cards, Motorhome Insurance, Cooking on your travels etc. Anyone wishing to share their talents could contact Carol on 07 3851 0598 to be included in this program. The theme will be "Christmas in July" so be prepared to decorate your place at the table for the dinner. Green table clothes will be supplied by the club. Also a Christmas Theme will be carried through to after dinner branch acts. It has been suggested we try to self cater some of our evening meals. Look out for the Spaghetti Night, Chicken and Vegetables etc. If you plan to go on the coach and boat trip on Wednesday 21st July it will cost $50 per person. It is a lunch time cruise up the Pumicestone Passage between Bribie Island and the mainland. Bring hat, binoculars, sunscreen and cameras. The names of persons coming on this trip need to be sent to me at least 10 days before the trip. We are limited to 55. Details can be found on their website www.ferryman.com.au. Numbers for the Christmas Dinner need to be finalised before the rally date so those too should be to me a week before. Cheers, Carol Lapworth (Rally Co-Ordinator) |
| NATIONAL RALLY Update on Wyllie Park at Petrie. It will not be available before the Rally to overnight stays. The Sate Government has not transferred the rights to the local Council so their rules still apply. It is not anticipated to be released until after our Rally. I have just had the OK for anyone travelling through Toogoolawah on their way to the Rally to stay at Skydive Ramblers Drop Zone. It is appreciated if you phone in advance of staying on 07 5423 1159. It is 2 kms north of Toogoolawah on the Brisbane Valley Highway. The signpost is easily missed as it blends into the landscape. They have hot showers for $1, coin laundry washing and drying machines at $3 each, and for $295 you can do a Tandem Jump. At the weekends the snack bar serves meals at great prices. Powered sites are $12 and other camping is free. This is an extensive camp area and off the highway. The planes doing the skydiving drops were not annoying. and the skydivers were great to watch. If travelling to Dayboro from the Bruce Highway or M1 take exit 133 which is named Anzac Ave, Redcliffe, Petrie. Then travel to Petrie where at Wyllie Park [GPS S 27 16 22 E 152 58 52], you can use the dump point and taps to fill your water tanks. Wyllie Park has traffic lights for entry and exit. Then travel west through Petrie to Dayboro and turn right into Mt Mee Road as you enter the town with the Service Station on the left. The SHOWGROUNDS is on the left just after the Veterinary Surgery in the old Sawmill. Look for the Auswide sign. [GPS 27 11 22 S 152 49 34E] If travelling from the west, the easiest route is via the D'Aguilar Hwy and stop in Kilcoy with a dump point and water filling options on the left near town. The previously free camp in Kilcoy is now $18. Just west of Woodford is an overnight stop at Cruice Park where free camping is still allowed. [GPS 26 55 40 S 152 45 33 E] From here take the Mt Mee Dayboro road turnoff at D'Aguilar and the Showground at Dayboro will be on the right. For those not trailing a car and with a small rig, the Trip over Mt Glorious on the Northbrook Parkway through Samford to Dayboro is beautiful. It is very steep and winding but much of the road passes through National Park rainforest. This area has many parks with walks and views over Brisbane to Moreton Bay. Samford is another interesting village to visit. The closest dump point from this direction is Fernvale near the tourist information building. Be aware that Motorbikes travel this route and warning signs are numerous. |
